A Beginner’s Guide to Creating Your Values

What do you believe to be important in your business and life?

It might be easy to say friends and family, but how much time do you actually put into seeing them and how are you prioritizing them? Your personal values can be a huge source of happiness so what you do and the way you behave must align. In the Fear Detox I talk about how you might feel conflicted and stressed when your values don’t align and how to understand when this might be happening. Remember, everything begins with your thoughts, how that influences the language you use and what you put into action. If they aren’t insync, you’ll feel torn, confused and anxious.

So, how do you get started?

Have a think back in your life when you felt really good about your actions, your choices and the direction you were headed.

Identify the times when you were happiest in your career and life, you were most proud or the times when you felt most satisfied. Ask yourself;

  • What were you doing?
  • Did other people share your feelings?
  • What other factors contributed to your feelings of fulfillment?

Determine your top values, based on your experiences of happiness, pride, and fulfillment.

Is it fitness? Determination? Decisiveness? Love? Enjoyment? People? Flexibility? Discretion?

Check your values you’ve selected and make sure they fit with your career and life and your vision for yourself. Prioritize them in order of importance and ask yourself:

  • Do these values make you feel good about yourself?
  • Are you proud of your top three values?
  • Would you be comfortable and proud to tell your values to people you respect and admire?

When you consider your values in decision making, you can be sure to keep your sense of integrity and what you know is right, and approach decisions with confidence and clarity. You’ll also know that what you’re doing is best for your current and future happiness and satisfaction.

Values represent how you see yourself, how you want others to see you and in turn how you treat others. We treat other people the way we treat ourselves so our internal language is reflected outwards. Remember that there is no right or wrong answer in this process, only you can make the change you want to see in your business and life.
